Francisco Santos: Edicion Critica De "El Rey Gallo Y Discursos De La Hormiga" Y Estudio Sobre Sus Fuentes. (Spanish Text).

This dissertation is divided into two major sections. The first deals with textual criticism and entails the presentation of a critical edition of Francisco Santos' El Rey Gallo y discursos de la Hormiga. The other section examines the literary borrowings involved in the composition of the work. The critical edition of El Rey Gallo was prepared for two fundamental reasons: first, the work has not been edited since 1723, and the only existing editions made while the author was still living are extremely rare; second, of all his works, El Rey Gallo in particular contains certain structural and thematic features attributed to the literary genre known as Menippean Satire. These two factors justified a critical edition. A bibliographical and textual study based on the neo-lachmanian school of textual criticism accompanies the edition. The collation of the variants suggests the existence of other lost editions. The text of El Rey Gallo presented in this dissertation is the one closest to the archetype. This edition is followed by a list of the significant variants. The study on the literary borrowings complements Hammond's and Rodr(')iguez-Puertolas' research. Santos made extensive use of the work entitled Leon prodigioso by Cosme Gomez Texada de los Reyes. Certain passages in El Rey Gallo which appear for the most transformed by Santos, suggest that Leon prodigioso was their source.
