This dissertation is divided into two major sections. The first deals with textual criticism and entails the presentation of a critical edition of Francisco Santos' El Rey Gallo y discursos de la Hormiga. The other section examines the literary borrowings involved in the composition of the work. The critical edition of El Rey Gallo was prepared for two fundamental reasons: first, the work has not been edited since 1723, and the only existing editions made while the author was still living are extremely rare; second, of all his works, El Rey Gallo in particular contains certain structural and thematic features attributed to the literary genre known as Menippean Satire.
